III.   Rationale for Course:

Although the U.S. is now the fourth largest Spanish speaking country in the world—with over 38 million Spanish speakers, Hispanic studies continues to be underrepresented in U.S. post-secondary curriculums. The literature of Spanish America is important to all students, since many of the works discussed in the course rank among the world’s most classic literature.    Furthermore, Spanish 352 gives students an understanding of our cultural heritage as revealed in Spanish American literature, its movements and traditions, through reading, understanding, analyzing, and writing about the major literary works from the nineteenth century to the present.  These literary works have shaped our thinking and provided a record of human experience.  Knowledge of literature and of the techniques and vocabulary of literary analysis is important to the development of all educated citizens because it allows them to ponder the universal values and experiences embodied in literary texts; to explore the particular social and cultural perspectives and practices--those of the past as well as the present--reflected in literary texts; to analyze and interpret the subtleties of human emotions and relationships as represented in literary texts; and to study the aesthetic and stylistic uses of language.
