Course Description:
Descripción del curso:  From Longwood Catalog:  Study of a particular Hispanic author.  Prerequisite:  Spanish 341 and 352.  3 credits.   In this class, we will focus on one of the greatest masterpieces in the Spanish language, Fortunata y Jacinta, as well as other works by Benito Pérez Galdós, sometimes called the "Dickens" of Spain.  We will discover the relationship of the works of Galdós to the literary movements of the nineteenth century, and to the historical and social events of that time.  We'll study the basics of literary criticism, especially in the area of narratology.  Students will use professional journals, books and other sources to investigate topics relating to the works of Galdós.

Upon completion of the course, students will:

• 1.  Demonstrate a basic understanding of the literary movements and tendencies of the XIX Century, especially Realism and Naturalism.
• 2.  Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between historical and social events and the  novels of Galdós.
• 3.  Discuss orally the novels of Galdós, his literary techniques, themes, ideology.
• 4.  Use basic terms of literary criticism in discussing Galdós's works.
• 5.  Demonstrate competence in research and documentation skills.

6.  Use professional journals, books and other sources to investigate topics concerning Galdós's  works.
• 7.  Take notes in Spanish from written texts and from oral sources for use in formulating andexpressing their own ideas.
• 8.  Use writing strategies to produce essays in Spanish with differing purposes:  summarizing,  analysis and comment, opinion, literary analysis.
• 9.  Edit successfully their own written work, recognizing deficiencies in clarity, organization,  support, grammar and mechanics.
• 10.  Use WordPerfect - Español or another Spanish language word processor to produce essays  and other written assignments.

To clarify some of the  points in the policy:
There are only 14 class meetings.  Missing even one class puts you at a severe disadvantage and will make it difficult to maintain a high grade.  Please remember that if you are not in class, you can not participate in class activities, which will affect the "participation grade" as well as deprive you of a learning experience.  No late work will be accepted as a result of absences.

According to the above Longwood University policy, if you miss 1.4 classes for unexcused reasons, your final course grade will be lowered one letter grade.  Please note what constitutes "excused absences" as defined in the above policy.  I will require, in most cases, written documentation to excuse an absence.

If you miss 3.5 classes, whether excused or unexcused, you will have missed 25% of the scheduled class meeting times, and will receive an F in this course.
