Since its founding in the mid 1970's, the Camerata Singers has been the flagship choral ensemble at Longwood University. In addition to regular on-campus performances, the choir has performed throughout the eastern United States and in Europe. In November 2004 the Camerata Singers were invited to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association State Conference and in October of 2005, the choir sang by invitation at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. In previous years, the Camerata Singers have performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall, the cathedrals of St. John the Divine and Saint Patrick’s in New York, and has given concerts in Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest.

The choir’s repertoire includes nearly every genre and era of choral music ranging from Renaissance motets to African American spirituals. The Camerata Singers has performed the Requiems of Mozart and Fauré, the Mozart Coronation Mass, J.S. Bach’s Cantata No. 80 and Magnificat, as well as other major works with its own orchestra of professional musicians. The Camerata Singers has also performed the Durufle Requiem, Mahler’s “Resurrection Symphony,” and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. The choir maintains its high standards of artistic achievement through a selective audition process and rigorous rehearsal schedule. All Longwood students, regardless of their major, have the opportunity to audition for the Camerata Singers.

Camerata meets three times per week (MWF) from 11:00am-11:50 in room 104 of Wygal Hall. Entrance is by audition. To schedule an audition, contact the Director of Choral Activities, Ryan Hebert at hebertrj@longwood.edu or call 434-395-2500. mailto:hebertrj@longwood.edushapeimage_12_link_0
