Therapeutic Recreation (B.S.)

National Reputation

Longwood invites you to be a part of one of the finest curricula in Therapeutic Recreation in the United States, and to prepare for a rewarding career opportunity in a helping profession. We offer a four year undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation. The curriculum blends comprehensive general education courses with professional-preparation courses and relevant practical experiences. This assures that each graduate has a sufficient background in the liberal arts and is also a competent Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, ready to meet the demands of a professional life as well as national certification standards. As a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, you will be involved in the assessment of leisure needs and interests, and in the design and implementation of programs and activities that promote the physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being of individuals with disabilities. The outcomes of therapeutic recreation are geared toward the development and maintenance of meaningful and satisfying leisure experiences.

Accreditation

In October, 1982, the Longwood curriculum in Therapeutic Recreation was accredited by the National Recreation and Park American Association for Leisure and Recreation joint Council on Accreditation. The curriculum was re-accredited in 1987, 1992,1997 and 2002.
