make every effort to respond to e-mail within two days of receiving it.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A general overview of information systems. Planning,
designing, and implementing a MIS system. Emphasis is on application of
the systems. 3 credits.
COURSE PREREQUISITES: CIMS 170 Computer
Applications.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course introduces the concept of
information systems (IS), and approaches to designing, managing, and organizing
IS. In particular, this course focuses on information collection, the
decision-making process, and artificial intelligence, using class lectures,
case studies, and case presentations. At the completion of this course,
students should know:

the definition of a management information system and the various
components of an MIS.
·
how to collect and manage useful data and information, and to understand
how information travels through wires, cables, and open space.
·
the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
·
how information systems influence the decision making process.
·
advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence.
·
how an information systems integrates a business.

SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS: To aid students in their further learning,
the publisher provides the following source, the Online Learning Center (OLC) for
this text, to be accessed from http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073511544/information_center_view0/.
This Web site follows the text chapter-by-chapter, and builds on the
textbook’s pedagogy and features with self-assessment quizzes,
interactive exercises, review material, extra material not described in the
text, Web links, and other resources for students and instructors.

PowerPoint slides for all fourteen chapters of the textbook are
available at http://www.longwood.edu/staff/laulk/CIMS370-B03Fall2008Schedule.htm
and on the Longwood Blackboard Web site (http://blackboard.longwood.edu) for
this course. In order to conserve paper, students should print the slides
in pure black and white and in a six-slide handout format.
These PowerPoint slides are very useful to students because they serve as a
summary of the high points listed in the textbook. However, students must have available to a
textbook and they are fully responsible for all content materials covered in
the text.

2. WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT:
Students must complete a written
assignment for this course. Students would need to go online and
conduct a research on the topic and add their findings to the paper. Students
can also include their own analyses, thoughts, suggestion, etc. One of the
primary objectives of this assignment is to encourage students to "think
outside the box". More details of this written assignment will be
posted on Blackboard in the Assignments folder.

Test # 1: Chapters 1 and 2 (2 chapters), 40 questions, and time-limit =
45 minutes.
·
Test # 2: Chapters 3 through 6 (4 chapters), 80 questions, and
time-limit = 1 hour and 30 minutes.
·
Test # 3: Chapters 7 through 10 (4 chapters), 80 questions, and
time-limit = 1 hour and 30 minutes.
·
Test # 4: Chapters 11 through 12 (2 chapters), 40 questions, and
time-limit = 45 minutes.
·
Final exam: Chapters 13 through 14 (2 chapters), 40 questions and
time-limit = 45 minutes. The senior re-exam policy has been eliminated.
·
The instructor reserves the right to make any appropriate and necessary
changes to the Course Syllabus and Class Schedule.
·
Students are responsible for all materials covered in the
textbook. Any student having difficulty with the materials should e-mail
or make an appointment to see the instructor.
