Course Description: English 100: Reading and writing expository prose including the research paper.

Texts: The Concise Guide to Writing, ed. Axelrod and Cooper, Second Edition; The Longwood Style Manual, revised 1998; Edward O. Wilson, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge (Knopf).

Course Objectives: The ability to write and speak logically, clearly, precisely, and the ability through accurate reading and listening to acquire, organize, present, and document information and ideas through formal in-class and out-of-class essay writing, written exams, and unannounced quizzes.

Course Requirements: read the material specifically assigned for discussion on the dates shown (200 points); write short papers in assigned formats for the dates indicated (250 points); write one longer paper involving analysis and research (50 points); complete a short answer exam on principles of composition (100 points); write an essay final exam using the material covered in the course (200 points). Take unannounced quizzes on assigned reading (200 points). You should save all returned written work from the course for one semester. Grading scale: 90%=A; 80%=B; 70%=C; 60%=D; less than 60%=F.

Policies: See the College Catalog and the Student Handbook. Unexcused absences for more than 10% of classes may lower a final grade one letter. Absence, excused and/or unexcused, from more than 25% of classes may be an automatic F in the course. Students are expected to abide by the college Honor Code.

Inclement Weather: If the college closes for inclement weather, students should continue work as outlined above.
