COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Music 181, 182, 281, 282, 381, 382, 481, 482, 483. Voice. Applied Concentration. One hour individual lesson or equivalent each week. 2 credits.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of these courses students will be able to
1. Sing appropriate number
of pieces (new in this semester) from memory
2. Sing the required literature in the appropriate style and with greater technical/vocal
skill
than in prior semesters.
3. Demonstrate a more sophisticated/refined musical understanding and perform
with
greater
self confidence and poise than in prior semesters.

You are expected to attend most recitals and concerts sponsored by the
Department of Music
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: The following applies to the 2-credit concentration. For 3-credit performance concentration, all requirements are proportionally larger.
ATTENDANCE at required events (class schedule, above).
PRACTICE: minimum of 10 hours per week.
PREPARATION: Come to your lesson with all words, notes and rhythms in place, so that we can work on musicianship and vocal technique during your lessons. Please be prepared. Your teacher will not teach you the notes.
REPERTOIRE: Literature will be assigned each semester by your teacher. In some cases your teacher will designate that 2 or more small pieces should be counted as one. A large, multi-movement work may be counted as more than one.
Freshman: 1st semester
- at least 5 pieces (art songs) in at least two different languages
2nd semester - 5-6 pieces (art songs and one aria) in at least three languages
Sophomore: each semester - 6-7 pieces (art songs and at least one aria) in four languages.
Junior: each semester - 7 pieces (art songs and at least one aria) in four languages.
Senior: senior recital
PERFORMANCE:
Studio - Plan to perform at every studio class as specified in the class
schedule.
Departmental Recital - Optional for 181. Others must perform at least
once each semester. Students at 281 level and above should perform more
than once each semester.
Senior Recital - Required.
Jury - Required. Sophomores in MUSC282 will perform several selections
and speak about them in a 20 minute jury. Others will perform several selections
and answer some questions about them in a 12 minute jury. Students may choose
the first piece, and the jurors will choose the other pieces.
GRADING:
Studio performances 40%
(optional 60% for MUSC181)
Jury 20%
Departmental Recital 20% (optional 0% for MUSC181)
Lessons 20%
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Students are expected to attend all lessons and classes. Unexcused absences will result in an automatic lowering of your grade. Absence from more than 25% of the scheduled lessons and classes will result automatically in a grade of F. See the College Catalog for a complete statement of the college's attendance policy.
Any arrangements to miss
or reschedule a lesson must be made ahead of time. Your instructor is willing
to negotiate, but she is not tolerant of irresponsibility.
