MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Research Report Guidelines
Reports will be presented in both of
two formats:
a 8-10 minute oral presentation
a 6-8
page written paper
__________________________
In researching your report you must use at least seven sources, and these must
be cited in your bibliography.
________________________
Bibliography
should be arranged in categories, with headings as follows:
Audio Example
Books (at least 2 besides your text, but cite
your text, also, if you use it.)
Periodicals (at least 2. Give proper periodical
citations even when you access them electronically.)
Web sites (at least 2. Be sure your choices are
reputable sites and have a specified author.)
The draft of your bibliography is due
on February 12 unless your report is scheduled on or before February
19. For those early reports, your bibliography is due at least
one week prior to your report, at the time of your conference.
____________________________
The content of your report must go beyond that in your text.
You should assume that everyone in the class will have read the
text prior to your report, and your job is to take them beyond
that knowledge. Be sure you address the following:
- background (personal information) -- home, family, other interests
besides music, special events, etc
- primary contributions to music -- type of music, major works
- why this person is important to the field of music and how he/she
influenced other musicians -- innovations
- how this person relates to other important figures living at
the same time (non musicians, as well)
_____________
The oral
report
-
must include an audio example (not
one from your text)
- must include
a Power Point presentation, based on your Longwood web site
- is due on the day listed
________________
The written
report must include references
which are cited in the appropriate formats. You may use
either of the MLA Styles Manual or A Manual for
Writers by Kate L. Turabian. Please indicate,
in a note after the bibliography, which styles manual you have
used.
Your bibliography must give an accurate citation for each source. See above for format.
In the body of the report you may use footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical references. Choose one and be consistent.
The paper should not include a title page or fancy binding. Put the following information in single space at the top left corner of the first page:
Your Name
Name of the Composer
Music Literature, MUSC137
Date submitted
The body of the paper should be six to eight pages long and printed in a standard font (Ariel, Courier, Helvetica, etc.) in 10 or 12 point type, using standard margins. Please do not use fancy fonts. (If you use inappropriate fonts, you may have the opportunity to redo the paper.)
If your oral presentation is scheduled before February 27, you may turn in your written report any time on or before February 27. If your presentation is scheduled for March 1 or later, you must turn in your written paper on the same day as you make your oral presentation.
Be sure to save a copy of your report
on disk or on your hard drive.
