Wind Symphony Information
The Longwood Wind Symphony is a 60-65 member ensemble which includes members from all schools and departments of the university. They have premiered new works by such composers as Steven Barton, Rob Blankenship, Jonathan Bruce Brown, Harry Bulow and Martin Mailman, as well as conductor Gordon Ring.
Numerous guest soloists have appeared with the group including Matt Niess (U.S. Army Blues), David Niethamer (Richmond Symphony), Dr. Neal Seipp (University of Central Missouri), and Longwood faculty soloists Dr. Charles Kinzer, Dr. Lisa Kinzer, Dr. Christopher Swanson, Michael Schutz, Dr. Christopher Gassler, Patricia Werrell and Sally Irwin. Guest conductors have included Capt. Frank Byrne (U.S. Marine Band), Dr. Russell Coleman (University of Central Missouri), and many composer/conductors.
2009 Soloist/Conductor Auditions
One student soloist and one student conductor will be selected by audition to perform with the Wind Symphony on their April 21, 2009 concert. Auditions will be held during the fall semester and will be judged by outside evaluators.
STUDENT SOLOIST:
Any music major is eligible to audition. Auditions will be held on Thursday, October 16 at 3:30 p.m. You should prepare a concerto movement, aria, or other work which is available with wind ensemble accompaniment, but the audition will be performed with piano or recorded accompaniment.
STUDENT CONDUCTOR:
Any music major who has completed the first semester of conducting is eligible to audition. Auditions will be held in November. You should prepare to conduct a work for band or wind ensemble with the Wind Symphony. During the spring semester the selected conductor will be responsible for rehearsing the group and preparing it to perform under your direction.
