Discussion Questions
- Read McDonald's discussion Elizabethan perceptions of Africans in the
Bedford Companion (pp. 276-277) and Elizabeth I's "Edict Arranging for
the Expulsion from England of Negroes and Blackamoors" (p. 302).
How do you think an Elizabethan audience would have reacted to this play,
and the title character in particular? Is the play racist, or is it
anti-racist? Consider this question, posed by E. A. J. Honigmann in
the Arden3 edition of the play: "Should the Moor of Venice be
played as a black, or as an 'olive-coloured' Moor of north Africa?"
