General Information

Studying Abroad in Germany:

Longwood, in affiliation with Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, is pleased to announce its Junior Year Abroad Program in the historic city of Heidelberg, Germany. Student participants spend a full year the spring semester the University of Heidelberg, and receive up to 16 credits per semester toward graduation. In addition, these credits may be applied as elective units for both a foreign language major and German minor.

Country Information:

Resting on the banks of the Neckar River, in the Rhine-Moselle region of Germany, Heidelberg is situated in the geographical heart of Europe. In addition to excursions to cities such as Weimar, Dresden, Leipzig, and Wittenberg, which are scheduled as part of the program, students can take advantage of Heidelberg’s central location to explore many major European cities which are just a few hours away by train. The birthplace of German romanticism, Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386, is surrounded by beautiful churches, ancient theaters, and historic architecture. Emerging from the forested hills of the Odenwald, Heidelberg offers a breathtaking environment and a rich cultural heritage.

Travel:

In past years, one-day study trips have been organized to such places as the medieval monastery at Maulbronn, the Black Forest, the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the cities of Mainz and Worms, and along the Castle Road. Regular group visits to theater performances, concerts or opera round out the program of cultural offerings.
