Directions for the
Green Commonwealth Challenge

In Executive Order 82, Governor Kaine challenges
state agencies and employees to see how many
deliberate, voluntary actions can be achieved to
lessen impacts to the environment for the period of
June 15 through November 15, 2009.

We will be judged on:

  • Number of materials we recycle
  • Decrease in electricity bills between
    2008 and 2009
  • All things we are doing to lessen our
    impact on the environment

Directions:

Please ask each of the people in your areas the
following questions:

1)  The number of in-person meetings avoided for the
week by using video or teleconferencing
2)  The estimates number of travel miles avoided by
use of video or teleconferencing
3)  The number of trips avoided because of carpooling
to in-person meetings
4)  Number of meetings that were walked to rather
than driven to by vehicle or golf cart
5)  Number of meetings planned where the agency
facilitated carpooling
6)  Number of people who tele-commuted to work
7)  Number of people who carpooled to work
8)  Number of people who drove a fuel efficient
vehicle to work

Please insert the collected total into the Green
Commonwealth Challenge spreadsheet and e-mail to
Kelly Martin at martinka2@longwood.edu
The weekly submission date will be the Thursday
following the reported week.  (Ex. The week of
July 18 should be reported on July 23.)

The totals will be recorded and updated on a live
spreadsheet on the sustainability website so you can
track the University’s progress.

Please also encourage you areas to minimize use of
electricity. Cut off their computers at night, turn off
the lights when they are not in their offices and keep
the thermostats at a reasonable temperature:
Electricity bills will also be used to calculate the
winner.
