Clean Virginia Waterways (CVW)
This statewide nonprofit organization is located on the
Longwood University campus, and has many volunteer
opportunities for students, faculty and staff. Every fall,
CVW organizes river cleanups throughout Virginia, and
collects acorns for future planting next to Virginia's
rivers. Every spring, CVW needs volunteers for the
annual Electronic Recycling event. Other year-round
volunteer opportunities exist. For more information,

Friends of the Appomattox
The mission of this local group of volunteers (based in
Farmville) is to foster the vitality of the Appomattox
River, promote stewardship, and facilitate sustainable
use of the watershed. It plans annual river cleanups
and fun floats, plus offers educational presentations

Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District
(PSWCD)
The PSWCD, located in Farmville, offers
environmental education and outreach to area
residents - and they often have students from
Longwood University serve as interns. Call 392-3782

Greater Farmville Greenways Alliance
This community group is working to increase hiking,
walking and biking paths in the greater Farmville area.

Middle James River Watershed Roundtable
This region group is a collaborative effort to improve
water quality through local and regional community-
based watershed projects. Volunteers can help
distribute educational coasters to restaurants, or mark
storm drains to remind people that waste should not
be emptied into storm drains since they drain into our
