Energy Management Program
Mission
The Energy Management Program strives to meet and exceed the university's commitment to minimizing its energy consumption, environmental impact, and energy expenditures so as to provide the greatest value possible.
Through analysis, audits, implementation and education the Energy Management Program seeks to provide a comprehensive service that will propel Longwood University to the forefront of efficient operation in both its current and future endeavors.
Energy Projects and Upgrades:
Bedford Hall
- Addition and renovation will be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) standards, thus increasing the buildings efficiency level
Blackwell Hall
- Installed a building automation system on the HVAC and mechanical room equipment to allow for control strategy implementation
- Replaced the defective variable frequency drives on the condenser water pumps to reduce pump energy consumption
Bristow
- Installing lighting occupancy sensors in all major areas to ensure lights are only used when needed, thus reducing energy consumption
Campus-Wide
- Adjusted temperature set-points across campus to reduce heating/cooling requirements and thus reduce energy consumption
- All residence halls have been retrofitted with sub-meters for electric, water and steam and will be integrated into the Tridium system for trending and real-time display
Chichester Science Center
- Replaced the defective variable frequency drive on the chilled water pump to reduce pump energy consumption
Curry/Frazer Residence Halls
- Installed a building automation system on the HVAC and mechanical room equipment to allow for control strategy implementation
- Installed solar film on all windows to help reduce internal heat gain and thus cooling loads
- Replaced the defective variable frequency drives on the secondary pumps to reduce pump energy consumption
- Replacing the defective electrical condensate pumps with steam powered condensate pumps to reduce energy costs and improve efficiency
Dorrill Dining Hall
- Performed chemical treatment on all heat pumps to remove scale from coils and increase efficiency
- Installed solar film on all windows to help reduce internal heat gain and thus cooling loads
Grainger Hall
- Installed a building automation system on the HVAC and mechanical room equipment to allow for control strategy implementation
Hull Hall
- Installing lighting occupancy sensors in all major areas to ensure lights are only used when needed, thus reducing energy consumption
Jarman
- Renovated to LEED gold (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) standards, thus increasing the building's efficiency level
Jeffers Hall
- Installed a building automation system on the HVAC equipment to allow for control strategy implementation
Lancaster Hall
- Replacing the old inefficient cooling tower with a new high-efficiency cooling tower
Lankford Student Union
- Installing lighting occupancy sensors in all major areas to ensure lights are only used when needed, thus reducing energy consumption
Parking Garage
- Installing a building automation system on the exhaust fans and fountain pumps to allow for control strategy implementation
- Replaced the defective variable frequency drives on the exhaust fans to reduce fan energy consumption
Ruffner Hall
- Installed a building automation system on the HVAC and mechanical room equipment to allow for control strategy implementation
Stevens/McCorkle Halls
- Installing a building automation system on the HVAC and mechanical room equipment to allow for control strategy implementation
- Replaced the two old inefficient chillers with a new high-efficiency chiller
Tabb
- Installed a building automation system on the HVAC equipment to allow for control strategy implementation
