The Virginia HIV/STDs Resources Review Panel:

The Virginia HIV/STDs Resources Review Panel meets quarterly to review materials for potential use in Virginia schools and for inclusion in the VCHETRC Resources Database.  The Panel focusing on reviewing visual, audio, and print materials related to HIV/STDs prevention, Family life Education, teen pregnancy prevention.  As time permits, the Panel also reviews resources related to other comprehensive health education topics (such as sexual harassment, abuse, and assault; parent-child communication; tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use prevention; suicide and other violence prevention; self-mutilation; health promotion; nutritional practices and prevention of obesity).

The Panel critiques and edits selected documents developed by the Virginia Department of Education.  Samples of reviewed documents include the HIV Prevention Education Curriculum Guide, model lessons for preventing HIV, STDs, and teen pregnancy across curriculum, Family Life Education (FLE) Guidelines and Standards of Learning, A Model Survey: Healthy Schools Makes Sense...assessment tool, 14 FLE staff development training modules, guidelines for local school health advisory boards, annual summary reports of local school health advisory boards self-assessment, and other survey reports such as the School Health Profile Report.  Copies of these and other documents may be viewed by clicking on the Publications and Resources link of this website.

The HIV/STDs Resources Review Panel provides guidance to the Virginia Department of Education in developing strategies to address staff development and programmatic needs of school staff members, parents, and community organizations and groups involved in coordinated school health programming and in Family Life Education.
