INDEPENDENT STUDY
I. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish basic guidelines for independent study.
II. DEFINITION
A. Independent study: A non-traditional course of common interest to a student and faculty member.
III. POLICY
Independent studies may be designed to offer a non-traditional course of
common interest to a
student and faculty member. A regular course will be offered as an independent study only
if the
student can verify that the sequence of course offerings does not allow
him/her to get the course
at its normal time. Rarely should a faculty member teach more than three
(3) independent studies
students in one semester. Faculty normally do not receive compensation for independent
study.
Willingness to teach independent studies as an extra
assignment should be part of promotion,
tenure and merit pay considerations.
