USE OF FORCE

I.    PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for use of force by Campus Police Officers.

II.    POLICY

Use of Force: All members of the Longwood Public Safety Office will only use an amount of force necessary to lawfully and properly neutralize an unlawful assault, or which is necessary to overcome resistance by a person taken into custody.  The department's sworn officers shall exhaust every other reasonable means before resorting to the use of deadly force.  However, the department will maintain and have available firearms by which to provide maximum police protection for the campus and its
inhabitants.
