Meeting Minutes - October 2, 2021
A regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Longwood University Alumni Board was called to order at 9:00 am on Saturday, October 2, 2021, in the Maugans Alumni Center.
Directors Present: Erica Howell, President, Chris Tunstall, Vice President; Nicole Perkins, Treasurer; Chris Davis, Secretary; Kathy Hansen Fox; Robin Liesfeld; Cydney Cavender; Lynne Chambers; Dan Hughes; Rachel Rose; Rickie Hodges; Eboni Lee; Shawn Evans McDougall; Harron Fells; Charlaine Hirst; Brenda Ojibway; Linda Norris; Byron Bracey; Paige Rollins, Kathy Verhappen, Brittany Jackson
Directors Absent: Heather Brown, George Moore and Becky Schnekser
Representatives Present: Tammy Bird Jones, Foundation Board Rep; Dr. James Trent, President of LBAA, Dr. Erica Brown-Meredith, Head of CLASP, President Taylor Reveley
Approval of Minutes
Action No. 1: Approval of the June 2021 minutes requested from Erica Howell: Motion by Chris Davis; Seconded by Byron Bracey.
Tammy Jones – Foundation Board
- 4 New Directors coming to make the current count 25 directors
- Longwood Cares Endowment is $876 away from being fully endowed. Followed by 2-year wait to gift
- Lettie Pate-Whitehead Foundation – See Website Scholars are now mentoring other scholars
- Considering Foundation Donation Cards again as they’ve been a nice touch in the past
- Foundation Board meets next on October 21-22, 2021
President’s Report – Erica Howell
- November 13, 2021, at 9:00 am is a special meeting for all, around Alumni Awards
- March 18 – 19 is the next meeting
Vice President’s Report – Chris Tunstall
- Welcome to Kathy and Brittany for their first meeting.
- Reviewed ideas for Alumni Board and Foundation Board to collaborate.
- Tunstall to present to Foundation Board on October 22.
Treasurer’s Report – Nicole Perkins
- 72 Class rings have been purchased post Ring Ceremony
- January 21 is the last date to order a ring for the March ring ceremony, including directors wants
- $22,319 Deposited into the account
- $14,000 of that has come from the partnership with Liberty Mutual
Presidential Update – W. Taylor Reveley IV
- COVID update: Things have remained level with 14-20 active cases at any point
- Joan Perry Brock Center is on pace to open for the ’23-’24 school year
- School Endowment is almost at the $100m mark
- School is moving towards requiring students to live on campus for 3 years
- Better graduation rates of students who live on
- COVID cases are greater with the Off-Campus students than those on
- Affordable housing crisis in the Farmville/Prince Edward area
- 4600 Students total enrollment for 2021-2022
- Applications are up as a whole, but the conversion/yield Is the challenge
- Students who visit twice convert around 75% of the time
Special Guest – Dr. James Trent – Longwood Black Alumni Association
- LBAA became official on September 9, 2021, with the University
- LBAA Website Launched this week and is tied to the Alumni Association page
- 1 Year terms with LBAA board
- Fully endorsed the Theresa A. Clark Scholarship in the 1st year (Given 5 to do so)
- Members contributed extra $ to give scholarship year 1 instead of waiting for 2 for the first scholar
- Collaborating with Lancers for Academic Success Program (CLASP) program helps target 1st generation minority and low-income students to be successful
- 3rd Saturday in March is the annual Suit-It-Up event at JCPenney
- Developed an emergency fund for Students around Food, Housing, Travel needs, etc.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Board Relations – Chris Tunstall
- Initiatives – Look at filling Board positions in the 60’s, 70’s and 2010s for representation
- Alumni Board Orientation Session/FAQs
- Working on a binder for new member/current member
- Setting up a Board Buddy program to acclimate new members
- Goal to have first New Member Orientation on June 3, 2022, prior to Alumni Weekend and June Board Meeting
Alumni Events – Linda Norris
- Moton Museum – Plan for Friday evening reception at March meeting
- Volunteer event in March for Walk-a-thon Friday
- 2 Facebook groups online. One for the current board and one for all emeritus members
Alumni Awards – Kathy Fox
- Get any additional nominations by October 15. Utilize the link on the Alumni Awards page
- November 13 @ 9:00 am Special meeting to vote
- Nominees needed in the future for Citizen Leader and Honorary Alumni
Career Engagement/Structure and Function – Byron Bracey
- Finalizing mission and initiatives of this Committee
- Getting additional students to participate in the Work Shadow and Micro-internships
Office of Alumni and Career Services Update – Nicole Perkins/Megan Miller
- 160+ attendees across the 4 Welcome to the City events
- October 11 – 14 is Career Week with online presence, Resume/CV writing, student business cards
- October 13 Networking reception and October 14 Career Fair. Hughes, Jackson and Tunstall will be participating in Career Week
