Modeling Social Interactions with Graph Theory

In this talk, we'll explore how mathematics, specifically graph theory, helps answer questions about how people interact in society. First, I will give a brief introduction to graph theory, discussing important definitions and meanings, and connect graph theory to its applied cousin, network analysis. Second, I will highlight a number of practical way that graphs/networks have been used to model social interactions, from Game of Thrones character interactions to academic collaboration networks. I will conclude by discussing which skills and knowledge are particularly useful for working in this field.

Crystal is a mathematical sociologist and Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology at Duke University. She received a B.S. in Mathematics from Longwood University in 2012, an M.S. in Sociology with graduate minors in Mathematics and Statistics from Iowa State University in 2015, and an M.A. in Sociology from Duke University in 2018. Broadly, her research is concerned with racialized social networks in higher education and how they create, maintain, and reproduce racial inequalities.
