Course Description:

"Cross-cultural psychology is the systematic study of relationships between the
cultural context of human development and the behaviors that become
established in the repertoire of individuals growing up in a particular culture"
(Berry, Poortinga, & Pandey, 1997, p. x)

The class will begin on May 17th. We will study in the classroom during the week of May 17th through May 21st at Longwood College. During this "didactic" section of the course, students will attend class for two hours each day, and will read selected articles on Cross-Cultural Psychology. Class time will be spent discussing the content of these articles, listening to other information presented by Dr. Bjornsen on Cross-Cultural Psychology, as well as information regarding the countries we will be visiting. Students will be tested on the material read and presented during this week of class on the 21st.

I have arranged with the director of housing to allow students to live in on-campus during the first week of this class. Then, on May 24th, we travel as a group to Paris, France. Students will be chaperoned by Dr. Bjornsen and Dr. Maureen Walls, a psychologist who teaches in the psychology department and also works as a therapist in the Longwood College Counseling Center. While in Europe, the group will travel to several cities in France, Switzerland and Italy. Students will not be allowed to venture off by themselves without the permission of Dr. Bjornsen.

In each city, we will have an "experiential education" component: Meeting with a Psychologist (research and/or practice), Public Mental Health providers, and Psychology students to learn about how psychology "works" in different cultures, and how culture creates people with different characteristics. We will also be meeting with students studying psychology in France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Students will then be expected to spend the weekend at home preparing to leave for Europe on Monday, May 24th. Students must arrange for their own transportation to Dulles Airport, just West of Washington, D.C., for the 6:50 p.m. / or 10:50 p.m. flight. Students should plan on arriving at Dulles by 5:00 p.m. at the latest. We will meet at the departure gate for our flight. If students are planning to leave a vehicle in the long-term parking lot at Dulles, they should be prepared to pay $5.00 per day when they return on June 9th. This total would be $80.00. It is recommended that students leave this amount of cash in an envelope in the glove compartment of their vehicle, so that there will be no difficulty paying for parking upon return to the U.S. We will leave Rome on June 9th to return to Washington, D.C. As a group we can of course arrange to car-pool to and from Dulles.

Students will spend the weekend before we depart for Paris writing a list of questions that they can ask French, Swiss, and Italien residents which pertain to the topic of the class. These questions should in part come from the reading and learning that will have taken place during the week prior to the trip to Europe.

All participants will be given the opportunity to participate in an open Forum we will give to the entire campus in the Fall to describe the experience of the class and trip. I will set up a time in either Hiner or Hull auditorium, and we will present our experience to any and all students. Dr. Bjornsen will scan in photos of our trip to use as a Power Point slide show that will accompany the presentation.  I see this as a very informal presentation, with lots of give-and-take discussion with the audience.

For students taking the class:

Those of you taking the class, you should buy the book in the bookstore before the class begins, and read chapters 1, 2, & 3 before class starts. We're only meeting for a week in class, and unless you want to be tested over in Europe (I wouldn't) we need to get this out of the way before we go.

Required Reading:

Culture and Psychology, by David Matsumoto. 1996, Brooks-Cole Publishing.

Course Objectives:

(1) To introduce students to the specialty area within psychology called cross-cultural psychology.

(2) To learn how culture affects human development, and how humans create culture.

(3) To broaden the perspective of students taking the class, fostering an appreciation of human beings that is much richer and deeper than before

(4) To awaken the spirit of exploration in each student

Class assignments:

Your grade in the class will be determined through
the following:

1.  Reading, class attendance & participation, and quizzes during week one.

2. Investigate your cultural heritage and investigate the culture of one of the countries we will visit in the next few weeks. This will be done in conversations with your family members, and finding reading in the library and on the internet about France, Switzerland, and Italy.

3. Written Journal kept in Europe. Entries must be written daily. Dr. Bjornsen
will check on these regularly. Journal entries will reflect learning that either links together or goes beyond what we learned in week one and direct experiences in Europe. These journals will be turned in to Dr. Bjornsen. Selections from this journal will be used in a Web Page that Dr. B will construct about our class/trip. Students will be given their journals back either in person at the end of the Summer or mailed to their homes.

Here's the reading schedule (read before the date on the schedule):

Monday: chapters 1, 2, 3  (pp. 1-56)
Tuesday - chapters 5, 7  (pp. 77-106, 137-156)
Wednesday - chapters  8, 9 (pp. 157-202)
Thursday - chapters 10, 12 (pp. 203-220, 243-264)
Friday - chapters 14, 15 (pp. 285-311)

We will have one quiz on Wednesday, first part of class, on chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and other material I bring in to class in lecture format. The second quiz will be on Friday, after we discuss chapters 14 & 15, and will cover chapters 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, & 15, and other material in lecture.

Points for the class:
Quizzes: 100 points each (200)
Participation: 200 points
Journals:  200 points
Total: 600 points
Grading: 10-point scale.

The Glacier Express - Zermatt to St Moritz - 7 hr 15 min - This route provides the traveller with 291 km (182 mi) of varied scenery through the enchanting landscape of the Alps. On this, the slowest express train in the world, you make your way through 91 tunnels, over 291 bridges, across the 6,777 foot Oberalp Pass and through the longest metre-gauge railway tunnell in existence. The steepest parts of the stretch are accomplished by virtue of rack-railways.

Miscellaneous Travel Information:

Much more information will be provided here as I extract information from the Travel Guide books I've purchased. If you want to save some money, I'll let you use the Travel Guides I have.

You should have: Passport, Driver's License, International Student ID card, Longwood College student ID, Copy of Birth Certificate, Social Security Card.

Make sure you have insurance before you leave. The College requires proof of insurance before it will let you travel under its auspices. Please talk to John Reynolds in the International Studies Program, 2nd floor Grainger.

Some countries do not allow visitors to enter if their passport expires in under six months.

Photocopy the photo page of your passport, your driver's license, your second photo ID, any credit cards you are carrying, your birth certificate. Give me a copy of these photocopies, and leave a copy at home with your parents. In case these items get ripped off while in Europe, these copies will make it easier to cancel or replace your items.

Do not bring any expensive items with you on the trip. If you must (e.g., camera), bring the receipt if you have it. This way if customs decides to challenge you on where you purchased the item, you'll be able to document that you did not purchase it on the trip. (Items purchased on the trip are supposed to be taxed when you leave.)

If you will have any prescription drugs with you, carry them in the original containers. We are told also to carry prescription drugs in carry-on bags, not in checked luggage. Luggage is scanned for contents before loading, and if the scanner detects capsules or pills, they may hold the bag in the airport and wait until the owner comes to claim it before searching it and releasing it to you. You don't want to get to Paris while your bags are sitting in customs in Washington, D.C.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, carry an extra pair and the prescription.

The International Student Identity Card is the most widely accepted form of student identification. It will provide you with discounts for sights, theaters, museums, etc. If you have one, ask about discounts even when none are advertised. The card costs $19 U.S.
Go to this web site for the card:
http://www.istc.org/

You should obtain a Cash Card (Debit Card) from your bank well before you leave. This is a card that you can use to access your savings and checking accounts through ATM machines in Europe. You will need to have a 4-digit PIN to use this card.

Credit card telephone numbers:
Mastercard: 800-999-0454
Visa: 800-336-8473

If you know what's good for your wallet, you'll leave the mini-bar (small refrigerator)
in your hotel room alone.

Bring a litre of bottled water for the plane trip - one of the reasons long flights become uncomfortable is that people easily get dehydrated due to the dry cabin air. You should also consider purchasing one of the inflatable headrests and a pair of foam earplugs in order to get a good night's sleep on the plane ride over to Europe.

On the day we leave, students should not drink any alcohol. This includes drinking on the plane ride. Your body will have enough difficulty dealing with jet-lag without adding other undue stress.

Safety:
Never go anywhere along. Try to carry as little cash as possible.Carry cash and other valuables (passport) in a place that will be difficult to access by a theif. The best place to carry cash and credit cards is in a waist money belt or pouch. You can purchase one of these at Walmart for about $7.00. Never count your money in public, especially if you are alone. Don't use a fanny pack, a purse, a shoulder bag, or a knapsack to keep valuables; they are too easily pulled from your body by a snatcher.

Never purchase or transport illegal substances. You should expect to be searched at any time during your trip, and you should expect that the luggage you check-in at the airport will be searched for illegal substances. If you break this common-sense rule and you get caught, you are on your own.
