Course Description: English 100: Reading and writing expository prose including the research paper.
Texts: Reasoning and Writing Well, Second Edition, Betty M. Dietsch (Mayfield Publishing); The Longwood Style Manual.
Course Objectives: The ability to write and speak logically,
clearly, precisely, and the ability through accurate reading and
listening to acquire, organize, present, and document information and
ideas through formal in-class and out-of-class essay writing, written exams,
and unannounced quizzes.

Course Requirements: read the material specifically assigned for
discussion on the dates shown (200 points); submit by e-mail mlund@longwood.lwc.edu
body of e-mail, not attachment) or write in class 10 one-page (300 word/2000
character) papers in assigned formats for the dates indicated by an asterisk*
(250 points; some papers may not be graded); write one longer paper involving
analysis and research*** (50 points); produce episodes of digital audio
program** (100 points); write an essay final exam using the material covered
in the course (200 points). Take unannounced quizzes on assigned
reading (200 points).
Save all returned written work from the course. Grading scale:
90%=A; 80%=B; 70%=C; 60%=D; less than 60%=F.

Unexcused absences for more than 10% of classes may lower a final grade
one letter. Absence, excused and/or unexcused, from more than 25%
of classes may be an automatic F in the course. Students are expected
