For this project we should find support for the in-class essay on aesthetic versus mimetic theories of art by research into areas like the following:
1) the aesthetic movement of the 1890s;
2) scientific discoveries of the early 20th century that undermined fixed notions of reality (for example, discoveries in psychology and physics);
3) historical events that shook the framework of middle-class life inherited from the 19th century (World War I, financial crashes that precede and lead up to the Great Depression of the 1930s, the collapse of European empire begun by rebellions in Africa, India, or elsewhere, etc.)
4) critical analyses by other scholars of the novels in question or overviews of the individual author's work;
5) additional works of literature from the same period that reflect similar concerns (not necessarily read in this class);
6) and additional passages in the novels themselves.
The paper should be about 5-7 pages in length. Include references to at least 3 secondary sources. The core argument should remain the thesis you arrived at in the in-class essay, as supported or modified by additional research and thought.
English 513 students should produce a paper approximately
10 pages in length with at least 5 secondary sources.
