There
are two degrees in Economics, a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a Bachelor
of Arts (BA). In general, a Bachelor of Science requires additional
math and science and a Bachelor of Arts requires a language. There
are four tracks to choose from which have different areas of focus.
The four tracks also differ in the specific requirements. It is also
possible to major in Business Administration (BSBA) while concentrating
in Economics. These five options are discussed below and specific
degree requirements can be viewed by selecting one of the five tracks.
Please refer to the Longwood College catalog for course descriptions and
particular constraints that might apply to these programs.
A major advantage of most of these programs is the flexibility
that they allow. The number of free electives is large, allowing
students to choose to minor in an additional field. Many students
use free electives to complete multiple internships at locations in Farmville
or in their hometowns.
Bachelor of Arts, International Economics
The International Economics track requires upper level courses in the area of international economics and combines this with a minor in International Studies. Since the program is a Bachelor of Arts, a foreign language is required. Students might choose to combine this program with one of the many international experiences offered through the Study Abroad office at Longwood College.
Bachelor of Science, Technical Analysis Concentration
This program is intended for students who plan to pursue graduate school upon leaving Longwood. The math requirement is more rigorous and the large number of free electives allows the student to invest in skills that will be necessary for graduate level work. It is strongly suggested that free electives be used to complete a math minor and possible some computer science courses.
Bachelor of Science, No Concentration
The Bachelor of Science without a concentration track provides the most flexibility in both course work and career choices. The large number of electives allows freedom for the student to easily peruse a minor in any field at the Longwood College.
