Karen Feathers is a newly-hired Assistant Professor in Special Education and Professional Studies Autism Certificate Coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Va. Tech, a Master of Science degree in Curriculum & Instruction in Special Education from Longwood University, an Education Specialist degree from Capella University, and is currently working on an Ed.D. in Educational leadership with a concentration in Special Education at Gwynedd Mercy University.
Karen has been an adjunct in the ASD certificate program at Longwood for six years and retired in 2016 after 34 years of teaching in both general and special education classrooms in Fluvanna County Public Schools. She founded an organization in Ukraine focusing on education and social rights of children with disabilities and their parents after the 2001 adoption of her fifth child, who has Down syndrome. Through Ukraine Special Needs Orphanages Fund, she is active in work to provide special education professional development conferences and new program support in both Rivne and Khmelnytski regions for educators, therapists, parents, and administrators. She also works with Fluvanna volunteers in coordinating respite events for local children with special needs along with their siblings and parents.
In her spare time, Karen loves to swim, sing/play guitar, and visit with her children and young grandson, Wyatt. Karen and her family now reside in Farmville.
