Longwood University’s Board of Visitors today approved a 4.1 percent increase in tuition and mandatory fees for the 2013-14 school year, bringing that cost for in-state students to $11,340.
Room and board will increase 5 percent to $8,876, bringing the total cost for a Virginia resident living on campus to $20,216.
The overall increase for tuition, fees, room and board is $878 or 4.5 percent.
"Affordability was the No. 1 concern among members of the Board as we were discussing tuition and fees for the coming year," said Marianne Radcliff ’92, rector of the Longwood Board of Visitors. "The impact these numbers have on our students and their families was uppermost in our minds. However, we have to balance that with our commitment to providing the high-quality education these students and parents expect and deserve.
"We feel we struck the right balance," Radcliff said.
Increases in tuition and fees are the result of increased costs to the university for items such as employee health insurance premiums, technology maintenance and upgrades, and utilities, said Ken Copeland, vice president for administration and finance.
Out-of-state students who live on campus will pay $33,086 in 2013-14, a 4.5 percent increase.
In 2012-13, total cost for a Virginia resident living on campus was $19,338: $10,890 for tuition and mandatory fees, and $8,448 for room and board. Total cost for an out-of-state student in 2012-13 was $31,668.
