Today we are grieving the death of senior Riley Cole, who as many of you now know lost his life in an automobile accident yesterday near Scottsville, when en route home to Earlysville for the holidays. Riley was a well-known and active figure on campus, intellectually vibrant, and an adventuresome traveler who loved to dance, play basketball, and make others laugh with his jokes and puns. He was a devoted member of the Cormier Honors College, where this news is so difficult now, as it is also in the History, Political Science, and Philosophy Department.

To see Riley’s life cut tragically short --- just before the holidays, at a juncture in life when so much lay ahead --- weighs the heart of this institution and community profoundly.  We are a source of strength to one another.

Cherish time with family and friends over the break, and please hold Riley’s family in your thoughts and prayers.  When school begins again in January, there will be an occasion here on campus to honor Riley’s life and contributions to Longwood.  His family is in the midst of making service arrangements now for the days ahead.

Lancer strong,

President Reveley
