Three Longwood students discuss coursework together around a table with notebooks and a laptop.

Need some extra support in a class? You don’t have to figure it out alone.

If you’re looking for tutoring or extra help in a specific course, Longwood’s Subject Consulting program connects you with a fellow student who knows the subject and can work through it with you. These free, in-person sessions give you a collaborative place to ask questions, prepare for a test, work through challenging material or simply make sure you’re on the right track.

What Subjects Can I Get Help With?

Subject Consulting is available in a variety of courses across Longwood. Common subject areas include:

  • Languages, including French, German and Spanish
  • Sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics and kinesiology
  • Business
  • Music
  • Nursing
  • Psychology

Available subjects and appointment times may change each semester based on consultant availability. Check the scheduling system for the most current options.

What Happens During a Subject Consulting Session?

You decide what you need to work on. You might come in to:

  • Prepare for an upcoming test
  • Work through homework or practice problems
  • Talk through a concept that isn’t quite clicking
  • Review material from class
  • Check your understanding before moving on
  • Ask questions about a particular topic or assignment

Your peer consultant will work alongside you, giving you the opportunity to ask questions, talk through ideas and build your understanding of the material.

Some courses structure consulting sessions differently based on what works best for the subject and what’s happening in the course at the time. For example, Biology 250 may offer student study groups, while Chemistry 211/212 may offer larger test-preparation sessions when major exams are approaching.

Who Are Subject Consultants?

Subject consultants are Longwood students, too.

Working with a peer makes Subject Consulting a collaborative learning experience. Your consultant understands what it’s like to be a student and brings experience with the subject you’re studying, giving you someone to ask questions, work through challenging material with and learn alongside.

Will I Meet One-on-One or With a Group?

Subject Consulting sessions may be offered in different formats depending on the course and the type of support being provided. Some sessions are smaller and more individualized, while others may include study groups or larger review sessions.

If you have questions about what to expect for a particular course, contact the Center for Academic Success for more information.

Is Subject Consulting Free?

Yes. Subject Consulting is free for Longwood students.

All Subject Consulting sessions are currently held in person. Because consultants are students themselves, appointment times may change from semester to semester around their class schedules.
