Career and Technical Education (CTE) Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (PEDU 437)

This course is designed to prepare new Career and Technical Educators to create and implement effective curriculum, instruction and assessment in career and technical classes at the middle & high school level. Participants will use the Virginia Department of Education approved competencies and curriculum framework to develop curriculum and lesson plans, design instructional sequences, and assess student achievement. Emphasis will be placed on differentiated instruction and authentic performance-based assessments. 3 credits.

Foundations of Education (PEDU 506)

This course provides foundation to the scope and nature of education in American society as reflected in the historical, philosophical, and sociological forces affecting the development and organization of schooling. Emphasis is given to contemporary cultural issues impacting teaching and learning in a diverse society. 3 credits.

Foundations and Legal Aspects of Special Education (PSPE 513) - SPED Provisional course

This course meets the requirements for the Special Education Provisional license.

This course introduces students to legal and judicial foundations of special education, including relevant legislation and current regulations. It also delves into the history of special education, ethical issues, and professional roles and responsibilities. 3 credits.

Human Growth and Development (PEDU 521)

The principles and processes of human development covering the entire life span. Major aspects of development (social, physical, mental, emotional, etc.) are traced through the various stages of development, and their interaction in organized behavior examined. 3 credits.

Teaching Reading and Writing (PEDU 524)

The course provides an overview of the stages of literacy development and the reciprocal nature of reading and writing across multiple genres. Research and best instructional practices for phonemic and phonological awareness, concepts of print, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, the stages of spelling development, the writing process, and writing strategies will be covered. 3 credits.

Reading and Writing Instruction in the Content Areas (PEDU 530)

An introduction to teaching reading, comprehension and writing strategies in the content area to learners at different stages of development from intermediate grades to high school. Designed for teachers seeking initial licensure, recertification or an overview of this topic. 3 credits.

Assessment of and for Learning (PEDU 540)

This course is designed primarily for PK-12 teachers seeking an initial teaching endorsement. By the end of this course, teachers will develop an understanding of what assessment of, for, and as learning mean and what the three forms of assessment look like in the classroom. This course will provide teachers with the knowledge, skill sets, and tools to develop classroom assessments that maximize student growth and achievement. 3 credits.

Curriculum Development in the Elementary School (PEDU 542)

A study of principles and current patterns of curriculum development in the elementary school. 3 credits.

Curriculum Development in the Middle and Secondary School (PEDU 543)

A study of principles and current patterns of curriculum development at the middle and secondary level. 3 credits.

Curriculum Development PreK-12 (PEDU 574)

A study of the principles of curriculum design and development for teachers who are seeking endorsements that span PreK-12 (e.g., music, visual arts, health and physical education). 3 credits. instructional methods for diverse learners, the use of technology, the management of classrooms, and evaluation of student performance. 3 credits.

Classroom and Behavior Management (PEDU 550)

Examination of classroom and behavior management techniques and the development of skills necessary to foster a supportive, classroom learning environment congruent with norms and rules. Includes an examination of system problems and solutions within traditional and alternative education settings. Includes a variety of behavioral, cognitive and theoretical approaches that are developmentally appropriate. Designed for practicing regular education teachers or for licensure in PreK-12 classrooms. 3 credits.
