In partnership with the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond,  a group of adults with Down Syndrome and our graduate students met over Zoom regularly to engage in conversation, enjoy each other’s’ company, and to work on effective communication strategies.  The group begins with an ice breaker activity where everyone shares about their week, their goals, their strengths and challenges, and their favorites followed by the lesson of the day.

Two of our graduate students led the group and created lessons targeting a variety of topics including self-advocating, interview skills, and engaging in turn taking conversations. This group provided our graduate students an opportunity to immerse themselves in a community of adults with Down Syndrome and practice implementing appropriate and effective therapy techniques.  Additionally, it provided our participants an opportunity to work on their communication goals while socializing with their peers and making friendships!
