Concerned About a Child's Development?
If you have concerns about the development of an infant or toddler, don't wait. Early identification and Early Intervention can make a meaningful difference.
The Infant & Toddler Connection (ITC) of the Heartland welcomes referrals for children from birth through age two who may have developmental delays, diagnosed disabilities, or atypical development.
Referrals may be made by:
- Parents and caregivers
- Physicians and pediatricians
- Hospitals and NICUs
- Child care providers
- Early childhood educators
- Community partners
- Social service agencies
- Health care providers
- Anyone concerned about a child's development (with parent knowledge when appropriate)
A medical diagnosis or physician referral is not required to begin the referral process.
Submit an Online Referral
Virginia's secure Early Intervention referral system allows families and professionals to submit referrals electronically.
What Happens After a Referral?
After a referral is received, a member of the ITC Heartland team will:
- Contact the child's parent or legal guardian.
- Explain the Early Intervention process.
- Gather information about the child and family's concerns.
- Schedule an intake visit.
- Coordinate developmental screening and eligibility activities, when appropriate.
Families participate in every step of the process and determine whether they would like to continue with Early Intervention services.
