Students receiving Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance (TA) are expected to complete the enrollment period for which their benefits were awarded. If you withdraw from a course before completing it, Longwood University may be required to return a portion of your Tuition Assistance to the Department of Defense.

Who This Policy Applies To

This policy applies to students receiving Tuition Assistance through:

  • U.S. Army
  • U.S. Navy
  • U.S. Air Force
  • U.S. Marine Corps

How Tuition Assistance Is Earned

Tuition Assistance is earned as you complete your course.

If you withdraw before completing 60% of the course, Longwood University must calculate the amount of unearned Tuition Assistance and return the appropriate portion to the Department of Defense.

Once you have completed more than 60% of the course, your Tuition Assistance is considered fully earned and will not be returned.

Military Service Obligations

If you stop attending because of a military service obligation, Longwood University will work with you to identify options that help minimize or avoid a student balance resulting from the required return of Tuition Assistance.

How Longwood Processes Tuition Assistance

To comply with Department of Defense requirements, Longwood University:

  • Calculates earned and unearned Tuition Assistance for each course individually.
  • Returns unearned Tuition Assistance based on the date you stop attending.
  • Does not return Tuition Assistance after you have completed more than 60% of the course.
  • Delays billing the Department of Defense until after the 60% completion point whenever possible to reduce the need for refunds and billing adjustments.

If you withdraw for reasons other than military service obligations, you may be responsible for any remaining tuition balance after Tuition Assistance has been reduced or returned.
