The Department of Music is housed in Wygal Music Building, located on Brock Commons across from Willett Hall. All music classes and most rehearsals, concerts, and recitals are held in Wygal Hall which honors the memory of Fred Orr Wygal, Acting President of Longwood College from 1962-63 and 1967.
Wygal offers excellent facilities for music study, practice, and performance. It houses a recital hall, rehearsal space for choral and instrumental ensembles, choral and instrumental libraries, classrooms, faculty offices and studios, student lockers, practice rooms, the Emily Clark Electronic Piano Laboratory, and the Computer/MIDI Laboratory. An attractive foyer and Haga Room, for receptions following recitals and concerts, make Wygal Music Building a complete facility.
John W. Molnar Recital Hall has a seating capacity of 191 persons and serves as the main facility for student, faculty, and guest recitals. With its excellent acoustics, it is the perfect venue for the department's Chamber Music Series.
Students are allowed to use the recital hall and its piano in direct preparation for forthcoming performances. To schedule rehearsal time , please contact the departmental secretary. Use of food and drink in the recital hall is strictly prohibited.
The Haga Room honors the memory of Professor Pauline Boehm Haga, who served on the Music Faculty from 1968 until her death in 1984. This room, complete with kitchen facilities, serves the department for receptions, staff meetings, and on occasion is used by other campus groups. Its use is restricted and is subject to approval by the Department Chair.
Several antiques and valuable pieces of furniture are located in the Haga Room. Special care must be taken by all who use this room to protect these pieces. Everyone's cooperation is appreciated.
The Haga room is available for student use on special occasions, such as receptions after junior and senior recitals. These receptions should be modest, and should be held to recognize the artistic achievements of the performers and give the audience the opportunity to meet the performers personally. More extensive, post reception parties and events can be held at various other locations on campus. Please call the Office of Conferences and Scheduling - 434.395.2228 - to make arrangements for such events.
Rehearsal Room use is restricted to regularly scheduled music classes, rehearsals, studios and other needs of the Department of Music. Individual or group rehearsal time must be scheduled in the Music Office and is subject to approval by the Department Chair. Use of the Rehearsal Room by individuals and groups not sponsored by the Department of Music will not be permitted. Storage of student owned instruments in the Rehearsal Room will not be permitted without the permission of the appropriate ensemble director. If such permission is granted the instrument must be clearly labeled with the name of the owner. When students use the Rehearsal Room it is expected that the room will be left in a clean condition, and the use of food and drink is strictly prohibited. Failure to follow these regulations may result in the room not being available for student use. The library is staffed by professional librarians who can give expert assistance to the user.
The Computer/Midi Lab houses nine Macintosh-based computer workstations. All stations include a synthesizer and speakers or other sound reproduction facilities, and samplers and other sound modules, as well as analog and digital and CD/DVD recording facilities are also available.
Use of College Organs and Harpsichord is restricted to performers who are familiar with the technical aspects of the instruments. Permission for individual practice time on the instruments may be granted the Keyboard Faculty or the Department Chair.
Combination locks have been installed on the Computer/MIDI Lab, Room 233 and the instrument storage rooms. Students who have legitimate needs to use those rooms will be issued the combination to the locks. If you are issued the combination, it is important that you do not reveal that combination to anyone else, and take precautions so that others do not learn the combination. If you are using any of these rooms do not leave the door open and the room unattended for any reason. The combinations will be changed periodically.
Lockers, available for music students, are located on the lower level of Wygal, and are assigned through the Music Office. Students using the lockers are required to provide a combination lock, and the combination for the lock must be registered in the Music Office. Storage space for larger instruments can be arranged by speaking with the appropriate ensemble director.
Practice Rooms are found on the lower level of the music building and are available for student use during the regular hours (7:00 a.m. to midnight). As a courtesy to others, doors of the practice rooms must be closed during practice. Equipment must not be removed from any room.
Certain instruments and equipment owned by the Music Department may be loaned to students on a semester basis for use in an ensemble and/or instrumental techniques class. Those who wish to use such instruments must apply to the director of the ensemble or the instructor of the techniques class and sign a form to ensure its availability and return. No instrument may be removed from the Wygal Music Building without written permission.
Music books, recordings, and scores are housed in the university's library, next door to Wygal. Music periodicals; documents on microfilm, microfiche, and CD-ROM; music video disks and music video cassettes are found in the library collections. The music holdings are extensive and up-to-date. The music major should be constantly investigating and using all the music resources. The library is staffed by professional librarians who can give expert assistance to the user.
