Longwood University Foundation, Inc.
A Brief History
The Longwood University Foundation, Inc., was incorporated on July 17, 1959, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It was established to support the goals and aspirations of Longwood University. Its heritage is rich and its accomplishment worthy of admiration and praise. The membership has always been comprised of men and women of integrity and devotion to the University that has served the Commonwealth of Virginia with pride.
The first reference to the financial status made May 1960 revealed $25 in the bank account and approximately $15,000 in bonds. Ten years later in September 1970, the financial report indicated a balance of over $72,000. By May 1980 the treasurer reported $1.2 million in assets; by September 1989 $5.7 million; by February 1997 $14.7 million; and by June 2008 $54.2 million.
With the funds raised in 1989 we were able to award $172,000 in scholarships; by 1997 it increased to $510,000 and in June 2008 we surpassed $1 million in scholarship funding for the first time.
